Alice At Heart
by  Deborah Smith

Water Lilies Series - Book One
Belle Books
January 2002

Alice Riley is an embarrassment to her Riley relatives. Born out of wedlock to a teen-aged mother and a man old enough to be her grandfather, Alice was raised by a great-aunt after her mother's suicide. Alice's childhood was so painful that she attempted suicide by drowning. She swam to the bottom of the lake and sat huddled for over an hour. When she didn't die, she knew that there was something very different about her, and she realized that only in the water was she free from ridicule, criticism, and self-doubt. When Alice is in her thirties, two simultaneous, near-drowning incidents half a world apart, will forever change her life and fulfill her destiny.

Lilith Bonavendier and her two sisters, Mara and Pearl, live very private lives on Sainte's Point Island, Georgia, where the residents hold them in awe and respect. When Lilith reads newspaper accounts of the rescue of a small child in Riley, Georgia, and the rescue of her cousin's son, Griffin Randolph, in Spain, she knows that her father's illegitimate daughter is alive and responsible for saving these two lives. Lilith is determined that Alice must come to Sainte's Point and learn the mystery and beauty of her heritage.

ALICE AT HEART is superb! From the beautiful Maxfield Parish painting on the cover to the index in the back, this book is a winning mixture of fantasy, paranormal, historical, contemporary, suspense, and romance, and is possibly the best story that you will read this year. Every finely drawn character is a star - each with their own poignant story. Nobody can mesmerize a reader like Ms. Smith and her deft talent takes the reader into the realm of the impossible and makes it reality.
